Maids of Biddenden & Biddenden Walking Tours

Eliza and Mary Chalkhurst were real-life 12 th Century conjoined twins born to a wealthy family from the village. According to legend, the two women lived to 34 years of age and left their land to charity when they died.

On the front of The West House, we have one of the two village signs depicting the infamous pair. Take a walk around and spot the other on the green or take our copy of the book ‘The Maids of Biddenden back to your room for a read.

If you like to work up more of an appetite, there are some wonderful easy to-intermediate hikes around the village too, many of which take in the stunning grounds of the Sissinghurst Estate.
